Sand is particularly deceptive and unless a good understanding of angles of friction, slip circles and the effects of any nearby structure imposing surcharge loads on the excavated batter the risk of personal and property safety is a real danger.

An important point to remember is that it is far easier and cheaper to address a potential problem by way of shoring or soil stabilization prior to any excavation than it is to conduct remedial ground works on a half excavated site which is ready to collapse.
