Foundation Design

Foundation design is divided into two main categories being the sub-foundation system and the main foundation design.  Overall foundation design encompasses many methods and solutions and will depend on the soil parameters and site conditions expected to be onsite.  The foundation methods for each category include:

Sub-Foundation Category

  • General Piling
  • Tension Piling
  • Ground Anchors
  • Soil Stabilization & Ground Improvement Works
  • Underpinning
  • Diaphram Walls
  • Soil Contamination Barrier & Quarantining

Foundation Category

  • Pad and Strip Footings
  • Concrete Ground & Strap Beams
  • Slabs

The following defines in general terms the role of a foundation system:

  1. Safe against bearing capacity or structural failure over the design life of the structure.
  2. Should not exceed tolerable maximum and differential settlement.
  3. Its construction should not change the design of the structure.
  4. Should be of adequate depth in condideration of adverse environmental influences.
  5. Take into account any soft or peaty layers of material below ground level.
  6. Any potential scouring.

Design of the most appropriate sub-foundation system is best done by a specialist design engineer.  Screwpile Australia and its associated companies, Fondex Constructions and Foundation Engineering Pty Ltd provide design and certification of the whole foundation system where required.
